I am very much looking forward to coming to Ndola Zambia in July this year.  I have been involved in voluntary work with disadvantaged pre school children in Australia for a number of years. Over the last couple of years I have also assisted Tibetans who have arrived in Australia, I help them with their English and in settling them in their new home.

For a number of years I have been keen to volunteer overseas and help children with their English. Last year I completed the CELTA course in Sydney to develop more formal skills for teaching abroad and also to assist in teaching my Tibetan friends. I hope this year in Zambia will be the first in many years of helping those in countries less fortunate than Australia.

I met Rachel Holst through friends in Sydney and was delighted when she asked me to come out and help with teaching the students English.

In terms of my background, I grew up in England. After finishing school I trained as a Registered Nurse for 3 years in London. In my early 20s I travelled to the USA working as a nurse in Arkansas. Back in England after 2 years I spent another year in England working as a night sister in a busy London Hospital. I then travelled to Australia via Europe and Asia. I have lived in Australia for almost 30 years now. I worked in sales and marketing for a number of large Pharmaceutical companies before starting an advertising/marketing business with my husband. I have a son who is 20 and studying business at University in Sydney. Currently I still work in marketing and advertising with Pharmaceutical companies but am spending more time in voluntary positions and learning new skills; taking art classes, learning golf. I love the water, am a keen swimmer and sail. I also enjoy bush walking, walking my dogs and generally trying to stay fit and healthy.

In 2005 I left France to live in London. I was a nanny for the first year and then worked for 2 years as a Nursery Assistant at L’Ecole des Benjamins, a bilingual setting. I then passed my NVQ 2 and 3 in Child Care Learning and Development. Working with children and teaching is something I really enjoy doing and I love sharing my skills with people, acquiring new knowledge and meeting the children’s needs in terms of development.
In London, I also worked for 2 years as a care worker with a teenager with Cerebral Palsy. I really enjoyed this job as I was able to create a friendly relationship with this boy and make the best of the time I spent with him.
In 2007, trough “The Great Generation” organization, I went to New Delhi, India, for 2 weeks to work in a social centre. We organized art and music activities with disabled and disadvantaged children. One of the activities we created was to set up a puppet show. We had lots of fun making our own puppets and presenting a finale to parents and local people.
I loved my stay in India as I was able to give my time to people in need and share the magic of this kind of adventure.
It was an amazing and unforgettable experience. I love travelling and discovering new cultures and beliefs.

I look forward to coming to Ndola and working in these 2 community schools as I am sure it will be an interesting experience for the children, the teacher and us.

Ceri and I met in September 2008 in The International School of Cataluña where we work in the same class. We really enjoy working together and share a passion for travelling and taking part in volunteer project of this kind.

I am very excited about this forthcoming venture when Chloe and I will come to Ndola in July. This is a real challenge for me and something I have been eager to do for some time. I hope that I can be both a good support at the two community schools when working with the children as well as somebody who can offer thoughts and ideas to the teachers that we will work alongside.
I qualified as a teacher in 1998 with a four year Bachelor of Education Degree and have been teaching ever since. I am now in my eleventh year. I have been fortunate to have gained a lot of experience through working at various schools, big town schools, small country schools, a special educational needs school and am present working in an International School in Barcelona, Spain, where I met and now work with Chloe. I am very passionate and committed to working with children and find my career very rewarding. I am always eager to discover new ideas and thoroughly enjoy working as part of a team.
I come from Wales, and so, am a Welsh speaker and therefore Spanish is my third language. Languages are one of my many interests in life. Music is my main strength and I can play the piano and love to sing, both in my work with children as well as professionally. This year I am learning to play the drums and am looking forward to buying a kit to practice with. My husband, Gethin is also re-introducing me to the guitar too.
I love to be active and enjoy fitness immensely. I enjoy running and participating in various fitness classes such as aerobics etc. Travelling and exploring different countries and cultures is fascinating to me and this is another reason why I am so excited about this project. I feel very fortunate that teaching, as a career, allows me to visit all kinds of places and gain such unforgettable experiences.
I have been married to Gethin for four years, although we have been together for eleven. He is also a musician and a successful songwriter. I feel very lucky that he fully supports me in this venture. I’m sure that I will have so much to share with him when I come back to Wales in August.
